M. H. Graves and Burial Customs
Author:
Abstract:
The author in this article describes the main characteristics of the Middle Helladic burials and mentions the graves of that period found in Thessaly, Attica, the Péloponnèse and on the Cycladic islands. The he comes to some conclusions concerning the Middle Helladic burial customs as they can be traced in the findings of the above graves. Grown men and women, during that period, were buried in shaft graves while childen were buried in pithos burials between M. H. houses or under the floors. Plato (Laws, 12) condemns the habit of some European countries where burials were permitted in the courtyards of the houses. There was a cult of the dead buring the M. H. period and sacrifices were offered after the burial. Offerings were rare. The dead were put in the contracted position. This position was changed at the end of the M. H. period. The conclusion of the article is that there are basic differences between the Early Helladic and the Midde Helladic burials, which give evidence that at the beginning of the M. H. period there was a great change in customs and in the way of life, and the reason for this change must be the coming or the invasion of new tribes, which must be the first Hellenic tribes who come to Greece.
