Abstract:
The icon, from a private collection in Athens, carries the representation of the Deesis with Christ Pantocrator in glory flanked by the supplicating figures of the Virgin and St John the Baptist, and the signature of the Cretan painter Stelianos Genitis (documented 1599-1618). Analysed is the type of the signature, in which the painter mentions also his teacher, Petros Kairophylas, adopting a habit that derives from Renaissance Italy and has its origins in Antiquity. Discussed too is the type of the Deesis, with the apocalyptic figure of Christ in which two eschatological issues are united, a type which was widely disseminated in the painting of Cretan workshops from the second half of the sixteenth century.
