Bronze age settlement at Ermones on Corfu

Abstract:
In 1992, a rescue excavation was carried out at Ermones in west Corfu, where a Bronze Age settlement had earlier been identified. Three trenches, 2x2 m, were opened, and the presence was established of considerable quantities of pottery, similar to that previously collected from the designated archaeological site. This pottery, which consisted of coarse, monochrome ware, most of it handmade, was divided into two groups, on the basis of the manner in which the surface was worked: a) rough surface with no slip or burnish; b) with burnished slip. The presence of wheel- made pottery is suggested with some reservation, on account of the very corroded condition of the sherds; it will have been imported.Despite the fragmentary nature of the material, it was possible to discern the presence of a local pottery tradition in the area, found especially in north-west Greece, and with parallels on the coast of Illyria, from where there was probably some kind of population movement to Corfu in the Early Bronze Age.
