Abstract:
This paper describes an empirical research project which was decided on in May 1991 during the collaboration meetings between Stathis Efstathiadis, Professor of Applied Linguistics, in his capacity as Chairman of the Department of English Language and Literature in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the teachers of French, German and Italian as obligatory foreign languages at the same Department.A closed questions questionnaire was chosen as the instrument for the collection of data. By these questions we elicited information about educational characteristics, self- assessment of language abilities, learning needs, motivations and expectations, opinions and proposals about the formal-external characteristics of the future foreign language classroom. From the analysis of the data we have drawn the following conclusions: (1) many students have a previous educational experience in the language before choosing the foreign language course, (2) différer« foreign language students have different motivations (3) all students, regardless of any other variation, wish to reinforce their abilities Df producing and understanding oral language and they want to enrich their vocabulary, (4) the majority of the participants believe that they have fairly-good language aptitudes but they expect higher achievements at the exams, (5) students basically wish to be taught general language, (6) a large part of the participants consider the teaching of the foreign language for four semesters sufficient and they want it to be regarded as an obligatory course but with a limit of twenty students in each class, (7) the majority of students would prefer their classification in groups after a diagnostic test; there is a growing tendency to react positively to the prospect of being evaluated by continuous assessment but they still prefer final exams.
