Pre-orders have been used by the publishers as a means of finance, promotion and sales of the printed book since the 17th century. The paper aims to investigate patterns of pre-orders from the middle of the 17th century in Britain till nowadays so as to exhibit the use of pre-orders as adopted by the modern publishing industry (publishers and electronic bookshops) for promotion, finance and sales. Furthermore, common features and differences between the past and the present are pointed out regarding pre-orders ami subscriptions; for that purpose examples are used. In that context, the historical overview may enlighten the revival of pre-orders and their use as promotion and marketing method in a complex and competitive framework. The paper focuses on issues concerning the social and ideological use of pre-orders in the context of social, political, economic and cultural conditions. Conclusions, apart from providing a tool for understanding and analyzing current iss ues, demonstrate the role that the history of the publishing industry and of the printed book may have.
