Blown-glass vessels from cemeteries on Naxos and Paros

Abstract:
The area of the main Geometric cemetery of the ancient city of Naxos was used again as a burialground for Naxians in early Roman times. A similar phenomenon can be observed in the case of the corresponding cemetery of the ancient city of Paros, at modern Paroikia, with the difference that in this latter case, the cemetery was in use without a break from the Late Geometric period until Late Antiquity. On both islands the graves of the early Roman period were large cist graves made mainly of schist slabs, and frequently contained several burials, with as many as 12 in some graves. The majority of the grave offerings were glass vessels of various types and shapes, common to both islands. There is perhaps a wider variety of shapes on Naxos.A preliminary study of the shapes attests to the great demand for them in the Mediterranean area, possibly because at this period they were considered luxury vessels, second only to those made of precious metals, and ownership of them was a sign of the economic prosperity of a bourgeois family.
