Abstract:
This paper focuses on an icon of Christ Pantocrator that we found in Avgerinos. a village in the Voios district of Kozani (fig. 1).The commanding figure of Christ in this icon clearly follows the iconographie type of the Christ Enthroned painted by Manuel Panselinos in the church of the Protaton circa 1290 (fig. 2). the fresco that served as an inspiration to Dionysius of Phourna and his workshop for a whole series of icons of Christ Pantocrator.Of these icons, nine are in Mount Athos: 1 ) the icon on the iconostasis in the chapel of St John the Baptist in the kellion of Prokopiou in Karyes (1711) (fig. 3); 2) the Protaton icon (fig. 4); 3) an icon in the Monastery of St Paul (fig. 5); 4) an icon on the iconostasis in the katholikon of the Monastery of Karakalou (1722); 5) an icon on the iconostasis in the chapel of St John the Merciful in the Monastery of Karakalou; 6) an epistyle icon of the Great Deësis in the Monastery of Karakalou; 7) an icon in the cemetery church of the Skete of Kafsokalyvia; 8) an icon in the Kafsokalyvite kalyve of St John the Divine; and 9) an icon in the Monastery of Koutloumousiou (fig. 6). To this set of icons, all of which are attributed to Dionysius, scholarly opinion has added one in the collection of the Kanellopoulos Museum (fig. 7) and one in Rentina (Thessaly) (fig. 8). In our view, the icon of Christ Pantocrator in Avgerinos Kozanis ought also to be added to this group.Comparison of these icons with the Avgerinos Pantocrator shows them to be closely related, not only in the general iconographie type of Christ Pantocrator but also in details that are repeated virtually identically. These elements correspond to the manner in which Dionysius and his workshop painted the icons of Christ Pantocrator.
