Abstract:
The increasing need for communication between people nowadays has made foreign language learning all the more necessary. Ιn order to tackle the challenges of this new situation worldwide, the language teacher needs to make choices among various teaching methods and become effective as far as materiaΙ design is concerned. To achieve this he/she has to be aware of the students' needs and goals as well as the biological, affective and cognitive factors involved in the learning process. This, together with the knowledge of the culture where the target-language is spoken, should be his/her Starting point in order to help the learners acquire an overall view of it. Αs teachers of Greek we have an additional privilege attributable to the great wealth of the civilization expressed through this language: }γe are allowed to use it for teaching purposes in muΙtiple ways (e.g. usingliterary texts in the classroom). The exploitation οf such means not only supplies us with new knowledge but also assists us to an in depth study of our western civilization.
