Abstract:
The scope of this paper is to suppΙy a view of deixis different from the one in traditional Ιinguistic theory, in that it considers the phenomenon as far more extensive and unified, on the basis of pragmatic and cognitive criteria. More specifically, Ι will focus on time and particularly tense deixis; combining the view of Verschueren (1999) concerning the cognitive role of choice making with Langacker's (1987) comparison theory, Ι will try to show that tense choice in Modern Greek depends on two factors on the paπ of the speaker, namely the reΙevance and distance that he/she attributes to the event in question. Moreover Ι will propose that deictic tense choice depends on the same factors both in everyday non-narrative speech and in oral narrative production.
