Abstract:
An extended range of meanings associated with the (Simple) Present tense could be understood interms of a more restricted class comprising, among others, the annotate demonstrative andperformative uses recorded in descriptive grammars. What is common m both the narrow andihe extended class is the employment of the Simple Present as the grammatical template of atenseless description conditioned by the intentional plan of the state, ^ ^ ζ ϊ ,bv the speaker. Normally, a Simple Present tense utterance does not simply refer to a situation butrather forms part of it in two respects: as an utterance token and/or an abstract organizingproposition, .e. an intentional plan. Several interrelated modes oi planning Kc dabbed stationand, among them, Aktionsart classes, are identified to account for the polysemy of the simpleforms. These modes are shown to correspond roughly to difcrent types oidaeourse.
