Abstract:
Many researchers claim that improving students’ academic achievement, within the present ever changing and difficult sociocultural conditions, is a complex process that schools cannot accomplish all alone, without certain collaborations with community agencies and other professionals. Towards this end, the contribution of the division of Counselling Psychology can be critical. The present article discusses Counselling Psychology’s applications within school. In the first section, there is a short reference to the relationship between counselling and school psychology, while in the second section there is a description of psychological and counselling services within the Greek school. In the last two sections, the literature review deals with two issues: (a) the school community’s preferences for counselling and psychological services, according to relevant evaluations and evidence-based practice, and (b) the special contribution of Counselling Psychology in the school context. In other words, the article discusses what Counselling Psychology could bring into school practice through programs and services to the school community. Even though the article draws on international research evidence, there is an effort to discuss whatever conclusions within the Greek educational system and to bear in mind the specific conditions of psychological-counselling services within Greek schools.
