Abstract:
The present study aimed at investigating Greek teachers' cross-cultural awarenessand their views on cultural diversity in the classroom. These issues become important giventhat the mainstream classroom under the present conditions in Greece is becomingmulticultural and, as the existing literature suggests, teachers have not been adequately (if atall) prepared to teach in such a classroom. Participants in the study were 100 teachers ofelementary and secondary education; of them, 57 were females. Quantitative data werecollected through the Cultural Awareness Inventory and a structured questionnaire exploringteachers' views on cultural diversity and their role in a culturally diverse classroom. The resultsshowed the contradictory and dilemmatic character of teachers' attitudes towards culturaldiversity and point to the need of implementing new teacher training programs that wouldincorporate not only strategies for teaching new curricula but teachers' needs as well, as theseemerge in today's multicultural classroom
