Abstract:
This research was undertaken in order to examine the quality of the provided leadership in our schools. For that purpose, 75 questionnaires were given to the principals of secondary schools of Magnesia district and 62 of them were collected (82,6% percentage). The instrument used, was a questionnaire that was constructed based on the effective schools research findings from research on the principalship being carried out in the U.S.A. (Pashiardis, 1995). A similar questionnaire was given to equivalent surveys that had taken place in Cyprus and were adjusted to the Greek educational context. The questionnaire was referring to the basic tasks that a principal has to undertake and included 37 items divided into seven major areas: (1) School climate, (2) School improvement, (3) Program development, (4) Personnel management, (5) Administration and finance, (6) Student management, (7) Professional growth and in-service. The questionnaire consists of two columns with Likert- type scales on both sides of each statement. The statements of the first column were given in order to point out the extent to which the principals consider the given statement as being important for a successful principalship. The second column was used so that the principals would indicate the degree to which they felt they had a need for improvement, in the specific questionnaire item. A Likert - type scale was used here with a grading scale from 1 to 5. The method used was the variodotisis method, so that the most significant needs of improvement would occur. The main result of the research is that the principals consider all 37 items of the questionnaire, of great importance for ensuring effective schools. Significant needs of improvement were found in the items "School improvement" and "Program development". Notable is that principals believe they need little improvement in items of collaboration with the Ministry of Education. This fact depicts the bureaucratic structure of the Greek educational system. Finally, the most important suggestion that can be made for greater efficacy in our schools is the creation of post-graduate programs in educational administration and leadership.
