Abstract:
The main theme of this article is the examination of trends concerning access to higher Education at national level, between the academic years 1993-94 and 1998-99. By using National –level statistics, I will construct some "Indices of Educational Opportunities" that show the patterns of "distribution" of students in the various universities and other higher education institutes. The students will be categorised according to their parents' occupation and educational level (i.e., parents' occupational category and level of education).The main aim is to identify specific quantitative and qualitative changes in the representation of various "social groups" in higher education across time, and to link them to corresponding changes in the economic structures, the labour-market and the occupational prospects of specific disciplines.
