Abstract:
The present study analyzes dimensions of the problematic around life-long learning of educators (teachers in primary and pre-school education). In the first part, we outline the theoretical framework which emerges from the relevant international literature, and we then present part of the results of an empirical study on the views of teachers regarding lifelong learning in general and the "Upgrading" program in particular. From the data analysis of this particular case study a number of conclusions are drawn, the most important of which are: (i) the teachers have very limited experience with continued education but they acknowledge its importance. They remain confined, however, to the model of rapid, state organized and financed seminars, (ii) Overall, the teachers did not perceive the program under study as an activity which contributed to the improvement of the ir teaching, firstly because they participated in the program primarily for securing the needed university degree, and secondly because, as is the case with teachers worldwide, they expected to receive knowledge which would be directly related to their everyday practice and not theoretical lessons with no obvious implications for their work. Based on this empirical data we propose that analogous future actions, structure and implement programs which offer scientific knowledge in a way which suits the conditions and learning needs of experienced working adults, and which contribute to the essential upgrading of the role and the work of the teacher.
