The purpose of this article is to discuss the profile of adult learners and present teaching principles in facilitating adult learning. It is widely recognised that to cope with the demands of a changing society, people need to become effective lifelong learners. To help adults to achieve this aim, adult educators need to understand both the characteristics of adult learners and their social environments. Adult learners comprise the most diverse learning groups and thus adult learning is a highly complex process. Therefore, it is important that adult educators adopt flexible teaching methods so that learners can select the most appropriate mode to suit their needs. On the other hand, in most cases adult learners will respond to teaching approaches that encourage active involvement and self-directed learning.
