Abstract:
The author examines three issues concerning the beginning of theatrical activity in Moldavia and Wallachia before the breaking of the Greek revolution in 1921. These activities had a cultural but mostly an ideological objective and are considered as a kind of preparation for the actual revolution that followed (and failed in those areas). The first issue is the invitation of a Viennese theatrical company by the young princess Rallou Karatza in Bucharest. Specific research of the author proved that this company really existed, only it came from Transylvania. The second one is whether Konstantinos Kyriakos Aristias, one of Rallou’s amateur actors and later founder of the Rumanian National Theatre, really studied in Paris near the famous French actor Talma. But after examination it remains open. The third, the chronology of the first of those performances, is also pending, but earlier information, repeated in several books, has been disproved, so the issue is now a desideratum of research.
