Abstract:
In 1859, 1870, 1875 and 1888 art shows were organized, as a part of the Olympia Exhibitions, each one gaining in sofistication, number of artists represented or works included. Though relatively obscure, these shows did have an impact: They highlighted old or recent works by artists throughout Greece and abroad· art production was indeed for the first time accesible to a large public and not only to an élite traditionally viewing the annual salons held by the Athens Art Academy. Artists as well as people became much familiar with trends in art beyond the local region. Art critics formulated a more elaborated language in their commentaries and some of them were sensitive to their responsibilites. Above all, however, these exhibitions were not just a showcase for Greek achievements but also an education for the people, who tried to conjuct circumstances and find a cultural identity.
