Abstract:
In 1969 two rifled mycenaean shaft graves were discovered in a building lot on Veikou str. No 123 - 125. They were found to contain 20 undecorated vases ( 13 kylikes and 7 shallow handless bowls ) generally belonging to the early LH III Al period. From traces apparent on the surface of the clay, it appears that these vases had been covered with tin foil, obviously in order to imitate silver ware. This use of tin foil on pottery has been observed and published by S. Immerwahr (Hesperia 35 ( 1966), pp. 381 f. ) on similar vases from tombs found in the Athenian Agora. Apparently the custom was current among well-to-do Athenian families of the early 14th cent. B.C.
