Abstract:
Kouros no. 71 in the National Museum, known as the Kerameikos Kouros, was found in 1885 north of the Hadzikostas Orphanage; it was purchased by the Archaeological Society and inventoried under the number 4217. Four new fragments have been found and added to it: 1) a small part of the head with the side and back curls preserved together with part of the ribbon binding the hair; 2) the left thigh; 3) the right shin; 4) the feet and ankles with the elliptic plinth. Thesefragments are mentioned in the inventory of the Society. The restored, standing Kouros is slender in form and slightly turned to the left. It was made in about 580 BC, and from the findspot seems to have had a funerary purpose. Studying it within the chronological and stylistic context of the 1st quarter of the 6th c., we can recognize elements from different workshops and it is therefore difficult to attribute it to any particular workshop group.
