Abstract:
The fragment of fresco with the monogram of the Palaeologans published here comes from the tower on the acropolis of Gynaikokastro, an important stronghold built in the early years of the reign of Andronicus III Palaeologus (1328-1341). i The fragment was found in a stratum : of fallen frescos, showing that there had ibeen a chapel on one of the floors of the tower, and it must have come from the donor’s inscription. It confirms that this is to be identified as the Gynaikokastro mentioned in the literary sources. Certain constructional details of the west side of the tower suggest that there was terracotta monogram there as well.
