Abstract:
This article describes the restoration work carried out on a painting of the Three Hierarchs (Λ 189/ΣΛ 188: 0.865 X 0.716 X 0.25 m.) in the D. Loverdos Collection of the Byzantine Museum of A- thens. The work had undergone various treatments in the past that marred its original structure and aesthetic appearance. Nevertheless, the skilful draughtsmanship, stylistic features and peerless chromatic composition and balance bore all the hallmarks of an important artist. A careful examination and study of the picture completed in the laboratories of the Byzantine Museum in 1987 (removal of the effects of later treatments etc.) produced evidence that showed it to be an authentic work by Michael Damaski- nos and that helped to identify the three hierarchs (see the article by the Directress of the Museum, M. Acheimastou- Potamianou). The article has six sections: the first two give a brief account of the picture and its visible condition and damage. The third and fourth sections describe the examination of the work and the methods used, the treatments it has undergone, and the problems and particular observations that emerged in the course of the restoration. The fifth and sixth parts deal with the cleaning, consolidation and aesthetic presentation of the painting.
