Abstract:
The work of transporting the statue of Hermes from the old museum to the new museum in Olympia lasted three months, from October to December, 1975. The statue together with its plinth and the capping block of the base was carried in an upright position. We checked up on the system of supporting the statue by means of metal struts which were visible on the underside of the capping block. We were able to measure how far the struts had been inserted into the right thigh and the tree trunk by means of X-rays taken by the Center for Atomic Research “ Demo-kritos. ” There was one brass strut connecting the right thigh with the underside of the capping block and a central strut surrounded by six smaller ones inserted in the tree trunk. This iron strut was not extracted because it had been encased in lead and a thick layer of cement. The struts in the lower part of the capping block of the base were bound together anew and the whole arrangement packed into the main part of the base (figs 1-3) made of·marble from Domvraina, which stands on the ancient base brought in from the He- raion.
