Abstract:
The author of the article retraces the views of Adamantios Korais, one of the leading figures of the 18th century that introduced the ideas of the French enlightenment in modem Greece and played with his work a very important role in the preparation of the Greek revolution in 1821, against the Turkish occupation. The author follows the development of Korais’ ideas on theatre and literature through his autobiographical texts, his introductions in several important publications of ancient Greek texts (such as the Characters of Theophrastus, Heliodorus and Plutarch etc.) his letters to several translators of plays (such as those sent to the translator of Moliere’s Tartuffe) and also his views on dramatic literature that can be localized in many of his articles and commentaries.
