Abstract:
Galessa is situated in the west coast of the Island of Syros and has a natural sandy large bay. On the south side of the bay there is a steep hill with a small chapel of Ste Pakou on the top. Just behind the sanctuary of the church there is a circular field, today cultivated, in the center of which rises a round rocky hill.Pottery sherds starting from the Geometric down to the Roman period are scattered around the field and the slopesof the hill in abundance. Man-made curved steps lead to the top of the hill, where are some poor traces of perhaps a building or a small construction.A last century detailed map of the island indicates this area as “Mnemou- ria” ( = Graves) and near it mentions another spot as “Kaveiri”. The worship of kabeiroi on the island is known from its ancient coins, however the exact location of the sanctuary has not been identified to date.
