Abstract:
The site of “Angitis Springs” (Maara) became known to the scholarly world in 1980 when the opening of the artificial access tunnel to the cave destroyed deposits of mammal bones of the Pleistocene period. The purpose of the recent trial excavation there was to investigate the extent of the stratum, the time and manner of the formation of the deposits, the paleoecology of the district and the probable presence of man during the same period. The new data brought to light by the excavation were: a) the discovery of a stone tool industry whose technique and morphology resemble the similar Mousterianones of the Middle Paleolithic on the Greek mainland; b) the existence of two horizons, in which the stone industry is completely identical, but the fauna (equi- dae, cervidae, rhinocerotidae, proboscidea and a very few carnivora) has a different distribution of the kinds in each level: the large-sized herbivores and carnivores were found only in the second horizon; and c) in the second horizon a few bones of rodentia were also found. The conclusions are provisional as the whole of the material has not yet been conserved and studied.
