Abstract:
The hoard from Anarrachi (Kozani Archaeological Collection no. 2724) consists of 81 bronze coins which were found in an unpainted clay aryter in the rural area between the villages of Kryovrysi and Anarrachi Emboriou, in Eordaia. The present state of preservation of the coins ranges from good to very mediocre. The composition of the hoard is as follows:36 coins of Philip II: head of Apollo with a headband, horseman (4 types, at least 18 issues).45 coins of Alexander III, in the following types (at least 17 issues):I. Head of Herakles/Weapons, ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (10 coins)II. Head of Herakles/Weapons, B A (10 coins).Head of Herakles/Weapons, letters indistinguishable (2 coins).III. Head of Herakles/Eagle on a thunderbolt ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (3 coins).IV. Macedonian shield/Helmet, BA (the so-called ‘anonymous’ coins) (20 examples). The concealment date of the Anarrachihoard can be deducted from the generally accepted date for bronze issues of the so- called ‘anonymous’ type, which began to be minted about 325 BC and continued until the end of the 4th c. BC, alongside the posthumous coins of Alexander III in the type of Herakles/Weapons and B A, of which they were subdivisions. The fact that the hoard does not include any coins issued by Cassander is support for the view that the hoard was concealed before the end of the 4th c. BC.The place where the hoard was buried, probably next to an ancient road, has given rise to a number of comments relating to the topography of the region of Anarrachi, which lies on the borders of three kingdoms in ancient Upper Macedonia (Eordaia, Orestis and Lynkestis), in the lower slopes of an important pass over Mount Askion, leading from the Eordaia basin to Orestis. An attempt to identify the Eordaian city of Kranna, which is documented epigra- phically, could well, therefore, be a matter for future excavation and topographical investigation in this region.
