Abstract:
Lysandros Kaftantzoglou was one of the major architects of the nineteenth century. In 1830, while still a student, he took part in an architectural competition announced by Governor loannis Kapodistrias for a monument to the fallen heroes of Messolongi. Owing to the assassination of Kapodistrias, the monument was not built. In 1836, Kaftantzoglou completed his studies and shortly thereafter settled in Athens, where he exhibited his plans for the heroes’ monument in the Theseion (Temple of Hephaestus). These were not the plans he had entered for the competition, however, but a revised approach to the project. A published elevation and section from this second set of plans survive, together with other plans, in the Kaftantzoglou archive in the Benaki Museum. The fate of the first set of plans, which were entered for the competition, is unknown. A number of copies of the first set, drawn by the architect Anastassis Metaxas, have been found at the Documentation Centre for Neohellenic Architecture. This study compares and comments on the two sets of plans and the circumstances in which they were created, lost, and found. It also discusses the chequered career of the heroes’ monument in later years, when, in accordance with the wish of Lysandros Kaftantzoglou’s son, Leandros, (as expressed in his will), an unsuccessful bid was made to erect the monument in Thessaloniki.
