Abstract:
Fascinated by the striking Syracusan coins that depict a four-horse chariot, a quadriga (the symbol of a victory, either in athletics or in war), the painter Aliki Venieri-Skoulikidi was inspired to create a modern version in a painting which she subsequently offered to the author, a numismatologist. The author describes the evolution of the quadriga numismatic type starting with the oldest specimens of the 6th c. BC, from Chalkis in Euboea. She continues with the 5th c. BC Syracusan coins, that were of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship, a coin from Epirus of the 3rd c. AD and ends with four golden Roman coins, also of the 3rd c. AD, which, though rare, cannot be compared to the Classical ones from the artistic point of view. As an instance of later coins, which lack in artistry but where one can observe the change in the quadriga type, she mentions a golden coin of Constantine the Great (4th c. AD).
