Abstract:
The author refers emotively to his student years, in particular to his memories of Panayotis Michelis as his professor in the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens. He describes the innovations Michelis introduced into the curriculum and the manner of teaching, emphasizing the wealth of experiences students accrued from their projects, the related discussions and, more generally, their contact with the personalities who held chairs in the School of Architecture, distinguished intellectuals of the day. Among them Michelis stood out by virtue of his character and his principles. As N. Moutso- poulos says: “The image of my teacher, as it has remained indelible in my soul, has something virtuous in its spirituality. He had a profound faith in man, which emitted a moral grandeur”.The author goes on to analyse Michelis’s oeuvre as an author, architectural, philosophical, aesthetic and poetic, to conclude: “... the testimonies I give of my teacher are perhaps excessively charged ... Because they concern not only relations of immense respect for the great teacher and gratitude for all he taught me, but also homage to my wise ‘elder’, who taught me to see, to judge and to evaluate aesthetically the artistic creations of the past and to discover within them hitherto unknown forces of ‘self-knowledge’. They concern not only his sage teaching and the knowledge we acquired under his guidance about the essence of the works we were studying, but mainly the way of approaching the built environment.”
