Abstract:
In recent years, the status and the role of museums, generally, in their relationship to society and to the public, have been the object of serious deliberations. Theoretical studies, museographical practices and the adoption of new methods and procedures with regard to the presentation of exhibitions and educational programmes, as well as the architectural “spectacle” offered by many modern museums, have created new conditions in the approach to, and reception of, works of art and, in a more general context, have advanced views on the aesthetic and the educational - in the broadest sense of the word - nature of the museum. Within these terms, the museums of Modern and Contemporary Art, which in our times are being invested with particular prestige, constitute a major focal point and spearhead. The formation of an aesthetic experience in these museums is a complex process, its key point being the dialectic co-action of the conceptual and the sensual-experiential dimensions. Basic axes in this process are the intensely expressive communicative language of many works of modern art and the multi-functionality of the museum space, both in relation to the exhibits themselves and to the viewer. One of the principal aims is the multi-dimensional and multi-significant dialogue of the visitor, both with the museum and with artistic creation.
