Abstract:
This paper presents digital reconstructions of tombs l-lll from the prehistoric North Cemetery of Gournia, Crete. Through this presentation an opportunity is offered to discuss the impact of digital images upon the archaeological research process. These images are distinguished by their hyper-real aesthetic style and also the overwhelming offer of interpretative information. This aesthetic style entails an almost totalitarian character, which threatens the critical ability of the viewer. On the other hand, the hyper-realism of digital images leads to the production of alternative reconstructions, which promotes critical discourse about the significance of the burial monuments of Gournia. Thus, the reconstruction of tomb III illuminates the practice of “organic architecture”, namely the incorporation of a building into its natural surroundings, while the reconstruction of tombs ll-lll becomes the springboard for the examination of a tendency to borrow elements from domestic architecture to build burial edifices. It becomes clear that prehistoric aesthetic notions on the relationship between architecture and landscape attained an active role in the ways in which social mechanism operated in prehistoric Gournia. Disciplinary research on this relationship is mediated through the aesthetics of the digital reconstructions that visualise the above relationship between architecture and landscape.
