Farm buildings near ancient lete

Abstract:
The fact that the route of the Egnatia motorway is scheduled to pass through the rural area of ancient Lete led to the uncovering of 4 farmhouses. They were located 2 km from the site of the ancient settlement and are about 350 m apart. They date to the 1 st-4th centuries AD. Owing to systematic despoliation in the modem period, the buildings survive at foundation level; but it is clear that the various rooms are laid out around a rectangular courtyard. The best preserved is farmhouse A, which covers a total area of 460 m2. The entrance is on the E side. In the centre of the building is a courtyard, with the living and eating quarters along the N side. The corresponding rooms along the S side served purposes connected with the agricultural economy. The house is dated to the mid-2nd century. The fact that a hoard of 12 bronze coins of Gordian III and his wife Tarcyllina was hidden inside the building suggests that it was abandoned temporarily; and this was connected with the Gothic invasion (known from other, similar, finds) of the Balkan peninsula in the mid-3rd century. After minor repairs and the addition of a triclinium to the E, the farmhouse was abandoned at the end of the 4th century AD. The excavation yielded a limited number of movable finds: terracotta lamps, terracotta and glass vessels, toilet articles, and farm implements. A few fragments of clay figurines representing the Mother of the Gods bear witness to her cult in this area until the Late Imperial period.
