Vergina 2001 : Minimalia

This study summarises the principles behind the founding of the ancient city of Aegae at Vergina, as also its layout and development. The main consideration was the natural features of the site, which necessitated a specific mode of constructing the city in the 4th century BC. The writer also analyses the various features of the city’s political centre, with the palace, the theatre, and the agora, the various cults being located on the W side of the ancient city. The proximity of this part of the ancient city to the part of the cemetery with the greatest number of Archaic and Classical graves shows how important the area was. The small number of earlier finds shows that this area was probably significant in the Archaic and Classical periods. Three small finds (the seal with the head of Herakles from the Metroon, the gold Caryan coin of the Pixodarus dynasty from the Heuzey A tomb, and the seal with the goat’s head from the Goultidis field) indirectly allude to Aegae, the Macedonians’ ancient capital.
