Abstract:
In 2001 rescue excavations were carried out at 2, Ortansias St., within the boundary of the Archaic and Classical settlement (6th-4th cc. BC), and at 21, Embe- dokleous St., outside, but adjacent to, the settlement.i) 2, Ortansias St. The main habitation phase of the area investigated dates to the 4th century BC, on the basis of the presence of bronze coins of Philip II and Alexander III on the (hard clay) floors and of black-glazed ware. Under the ruins and the roof-tiles were found traces of a “hearth” and a kitchen (optanion), a cellar with amphoras and storage jars, a large room (6.24x2.20 m) where food was prepared (it yielded a knife, a dagger, and evidence that meat (beef and pork) had been stored), and a long, narrow open space with a storage jar for water. Another room, serving an indeterminate purpose, had been covered by the destruction fill from the house, iron nails from the loft space or the roof, bricks, and ash.ii) 21, Embedokleous St. Extensive heaps of stones and stone foundations with pottery of the Archaic period probably belonged to farm buildings on the E edge of the settlement, and may have been connected with structures designed to deal with and exploit water courses (ditches, a row of standing stones, etc.).
