Abstract:
This paper presents new archaeological data from the cemeteries of Ennea Hodoi and Argilos. In the first part, the topography of the new Archaic burials investigated in the north-west foothills of Pangaio supply new data for the debate about the site of Ennea Hodoi and support the proposal that the area of Ennea Hodoi was inhabited kata komas before Amphipolis was founded. The name given in the historical sources is therefore a toponym of an area, not of just one settlement or city. From this point of view, the founding of Amphipolis was a landmark event in the history of habitation in the area of Ennea Hodoi and substantially restructured the ekistic situation and the correlation between the Greek and the local elements. The situation seems to have changed in the 5th c. bc, when the data from the east cemetery of Argilos indicate that the Greek elements predominated. More generally, the recent archaeological data, which confirm and supplement what we already know from earlier excavations, reflect ever more clearly the fact that, at least in the late 6th and early 5th c. bc, the area around the mouth of the Strymon was a very important focus of interest for many cities in the southern Aegean.
