Abstract:
This small drilling project was carried out in Thrace by Professor A. J. Ammerman, Colgate University and Dr. N. Efstratiou, University of Thessaloniki and funded by INSTAP. The idea was to record the stratigraphic sequence of three well known Late Neolithic (6th mill. BC) mounds of the Rhodope Plain (Krovili, Mesti and Lafrouda) by taking cores down through to the natural soil at their base with the purpose of studying the soils that go back to the time of their original establishment. The study particularly included the study of the landscape of the time of the arrival of the first farmers and the dating of the mound’s earliest levels. The results of the work although in a preliminary stage were promising with the cores reaching in all three mounds the deepest levels and providing important geomorphological, palaeoenvi- ronmental and dating information for the still missing phases of the early prehistory of Thrace.
