Abstract:
In the summer of 2005, in view of the construction of a department store, an excavation was carried out at Kis-Toumba in Finikas in the municipality of Pylaia. The wider area lies within the boundaries of the cemetery of the Classical and Early Hellenistic period, which includes an impressive Macedonian tomb of the 4th c. BC and where 57 unlooted graves were discovered when the «Makedonia/Carrefour» was being built in 1999.The 2005 excavation uncovered 21 more graves, mainly pit-graves, tile-graves, and 9 cist-graves (some looted in antiquity), dating to the period from Archelaos to Antigonos Gonatas, and with some unusual finds, such as a tiny silver key and cadu- ceus in a male burial. Also of interest was cist-grave 4, which, though looted, still contained quite a number of grave goods, including clay vessels, remnants of a gold myrtle wreath and of an elaborately decorated wooden kline, and a gold eighth stater of Philip II. The interior is colourfully decorated in two registers: below a band of dentils, palmettes with pink and blue brushstrokes and tendrils emerging from acanthus leaves scroll on a deep blue ground. It is a very popular subject in the iconography of sepulchral monuments of the 2nd half of the 4th century BC, because the flowering tendril implies constant rebirth and the triumph of life over death.
