Archaeobotanical research in the Neolithic site of Kremasti Koiladas

This paper attempts to approach the different aspects of past human activity in relation to plant use, through the analysis of charred plant remains from a Late Neolithic site of Northern Greece, Toumba Kre- mastis Koiladas. The analysis of the archaeobotanical remains indicates the use of pits and, at least of part of the ditch located in the marginal area of the site from where the charred plant remains were recovered, as places where waste in the form of ashes was discarded, not excluding the possibility of its “burial” in “special” events with symbolic meaning. The predominance of glume wheats and in particular of einkorn, the important role of legumes in the diet of people, the collection of wild fruits, the processing, storing and discarding strategies of plant foods, the potential use of manure as fuel, the possible application of intensive husbandry practices, all, highlight the various aspects of the activity of the inhabitants of the Neolithic community of Kremasti, while contributing to the overall attempt of understanding the Neolithic communities of northern Greece.
