Abstract:
The valley of Aliakmon river, which is nowadays covered with the water of the artificial lake of Polyphyto, has been inhabited since the early Neolithic period. The great number of the archaeological sites which have been discovered there, as well as the destruction caused by the water of the lake, required immediate archaeological research. The first trial trenches were carried out at Kryobryse of Kranidia; the aim of the excavation was to search problems concerning the destruction of the archaeological remains and to evaluate the possibility to use the destroyed material of the surface as safe evidence for the habitation phases of the area. The survey and the excavation yielded a significant number of pits whose use still remains unknown. Furthermore, the excavational data suggested that the site was inhabited during the early, middle and late Neolithic, as well as during the late Bronze Age. The site was abandonded during the late phase of the late Neolithic period and the early Bronze Age, while it was used as a cemetery during the Iron Age and the Geometric period. Finally, it was inhabited again in the historical period
