Abstract:
The two groups of graves, presented in this paper, belong to the cemetery of ancient Liti. She was the most significant city of Mygdonia, the district of ancient Macedonia stretching from the river Axios to the lakes Langhada and Volvi. The first group was discovered in the modern village and comprised four cistgraves, two of which were unlooted. The built tomb contained a male burial with rich grave goods, such as a gold olive wreath and a silver kantharos. Another gold wreath with floral devices, leaves, spirals and flowers and other pieces of gold jewellery accompanied the female burial of the mud-brick tomb. The tombs date to the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. and were probably used by the members of a wealthy family. The twenty graves, most of them made of mud-bricks, discovered north from the village, belonged to an organized cemetery. The grave goods mainly comprised vases and rarely terracotta figurines. The graves date from the middle of the 4th to the beginning of the 3rd century B.C. Finally, a gold diadem and a gold ribbon-shaped strip with relief decoration were found in a looted cist-grave which was discovered to the south of theprevious. These distinguished artifacts which came to light during the excavational research, together with the rich grave goods of the tombs of Derveni and other burial monuments of the cemetery of ancient Liti, imply the floruit of the city and the high cultural level of the Macedonian world to whom the city belonged.
