Abstract:
A cistern was located and partially excavated at the crossing of St. Sophia and Olympiados streets, during the activities of widening of Olympiados street; the monument dates to the Byzantine period. Its external dimensions are 19* 11,50 m. andthe internal 17 x9,10 m. The height is still unknown, but more than 7,50 m., since the excavation was continued to this depth and the floor was not located. The cistern was covered with eight tholoi supported by its walls and a row of three columns located upon the axis of the building. A staircase covered with a vault led to the interior; it started at the southern corner of the cistern, ran along the outer face of the northwestern wall, and through an entrance it led to the interior. Water-supply was effected by a built pipe terminating at the northwestern side, while the drainage was effected by another built pipe starting at the northwestern wall of the building. The cistern was preserved below the bridge which was built for the widening of Olympiados street.
