Abstract:
In 1995, excavations continued at Stageira for the 6th year in succession and produced the following findings. 1) A 50 m stretch of the interior face of the Classical S wall was uncovered immediately to the E of the citadel. Two external towers were also fully restored in this part of the fortification. 2) Parts of three stone houses came to light on the E slope of the S hill. 3) A 10 m stretch of the Early Classical fortifications was cleared at the NE end of the archaeological site; houses of the same period were found to be attached to the interior of the wall and some well-preserved parts of these were un covered. 4) In the same area as the Archaic Sanctuary and the round The- smophorion on the N hill, a circular cistern hewn out of the rock was cleared and, next to it, we started to uncover the foundations of a large, long, rectan gular building of the Archaic period. 5) Parts of the shops in the Agora were uncovered a short distance away from the Classical portico in the centre of the Ancient city, containing large pithoi in situ. A large section of a well-made, stone-paved road 3 m wide was uncovered directly in front of the shops. The movable finds are many and various and include 32 stamped amphora handles, 11 stamped fragments of Laconian tiles, many fragments of large pithoi with relief, stamped, or incised decorative bands, several fragments of clay (and a few stone) wash basins, 38 specimens of clay figurines, 3 lead weights, 1 lead cover for a sword handle, and 200 bronze and silver coins.
