Abstract:
The excavation of the archaeological site at Karabournaki, Thessaloniki, is part of the programme of works instituted by the Organisation for the Cultural Capital of Europe 1997, and has led to the exploration of part of the N table. A few pits have been uncovered here, which may have been dug underneath local dwellings of at least the Early Iron Age. The Municipality of Kalamaria plans to build an open-air theatre on this particular spot. The proposed site of the underground storerooms and workshops of the museum was also excavated. A number of, mostly circular, pits carefully hewn out of the ground were located here, and a few more graves were excavated in the settlement’s Archaic and Late Archaic cemetery. The contents of pits and graves alike reconfirm the city’s importance, as also its commercial and cultural relations with the ancient world in the Archaic and Classical periods.
