Abstract:
In September 1995, the excavation of the prehistoric sector of the Arhondiko mound continued for the fourth year in succession. Once again, the investigations focused on an exploration of the Bronze Age phases on the Eslope. An interesting clay structure was discovered in trench A; it is elliptical in shape, with an apparently plastered floor, a vaulted roof, and an opening in the NE side with a small clay platform in front. We believe it to be a small oven for everyday purposes. A group of clay structures fitted into a small space came to light when the baulk between trenches A and Ω was removed. Their fine state of preservation, the fact that most of them are concentrated within a very small area, their direct connection with the pile dwellings, and the finds around them all point to a high level of activity connected with the storage and preparation of food. A number of C14 datings by the archaeometry laboratory of the Democritus University place the earliest phase of the pile dwellings on the E slope between 2300 and 1900 BC. The later phase of stone structures continues to later than 1900 BC. However, since there has been considerable disturbance here, the excavation will now be extended to other places on the top of the mound to procure further samples.
