Abstract:
The excavation at the site «Acropolis» of Platania of Drama, two kilometers east from the village, started in October 1990. The citadel is elliptical and its perimeter is267 m. The width of the fortification wall is 2.20-2.50 m. and some parts are 3 m. high. The wall is mainly made of rectangular and irregular stones and some smaller ones, without cement. This citadel and the similar ones of Hadriane and Platanovryse control the valley of Platania. There are many remains of foundations inside the walls. Three excavational trenches, I, II and III, were carried out. Two trivial rectangular buildings, dating to the 6th century A.D., were discovered in trenches I and II. Trench III was trial and strategraphic, and was carried out inside the wall; it yielded pottery dating to the Early Iron Age and the 6th century A.D.
