Abstract:
The activities of the 19th Ephorate of Antiquities at Abdera in 1991 were thefollowing: A. Excavation outside the fortification walls of the city1) Trial trenches carried out at the field owned by Chatzopoulos at «Paliochora» yielded part of late Archaic base of big poros stones joined with pelekinoi ties. An Iron Age layer was found on the natural rock: pottery and four shallow pits filled with stones and sherds.2) Trial trenches at the field owned by Lakkiotis at «Molos» yielded part of the cemetery of burial mounds. Two mounds with inhumations and cremations of the second half of the 4th century B.C. were found there.3) A Roman building was discovered at the field owned by Makris at Molos. B. Research at the southern peribolos of the city1) A trial trench outside the wall, north from the northern tower of the southern gate, yielded part of the foundation of the wall.2) Inside the city-walls on both sides of the western gate the Christian cemetery was discovered. Parts of Roman and late Roman houses were excavated.3) Trenches carried out west from the Roman house, excavated by D. Lazaridis, yielded parts of houses belonging to the same group and part of a road south from that house. Finally, part of the western wall of a Hellenistic building was also discovered.4) Accumulated earth at the southern part of the Roman house was moved, while part of the road of the western Gate, located between the house of the dolphins and the southern Roman house, was excavated
