Abstract:
The boundaries of the sanctuary of Poseidon were located with trial trenches; the sanctuary probably occupied an oblong promontory c. 150x60 m. Due to the narrow area, the latest building, temple A, was built between two earlier ones, partially occupying parts of them, while they were still in use. Apsidal building Γ (25.20x7 m.) was discovered in 1991. The two narrow sidesare apsidal; however, it is still unknown whether the southern apse, whose foundation trench is only discovered, was built in the same period with the northern, or it was a Hellenistic construction. Building é was probably built in the second quarter of the 6thcentury B.C., and was used until the early 5th century, while its second phase dates to the late 3rd or early 2nd century B.C. Its floor was coated with a white plaster, while araised platform (0.60 m. wide) is found along the long sides. The excavation was not completed and we do not know whether the building was also used in the Classicalperiod. Building A (23.20x8.5 m.), equipped with a porch and a cella without a pteron, was also excavated. The northwestern narrow side and the southwestern angle of the building are missing. The cella was used as a pottery workshop in the Roman period, while a pithos was used for water storage. Building A, and especially the western side of the cella and the porch, were constructed in an open pit and an open area for sacrifices, while 6th century pits were found outside the building. The investigation in the interior of the temple showed that the foundation trench of the temple destroyed the clay floor of a construction of the 5th century B.C. According to the excavational data, temple A should be dated to the 5th century B.C., after the Persian wars. The rectangular plan (20x16 m.) of building B, whose northeastern comer had been annexed in the foundation of building A, was excavated. The building is covered with a Hellenistic destruction layer, while the plastered floor of a room of the small building Δ touched its northeastern side in the 4th century B.C. The Archaic pit below building A yielded interesting finds, such as the Ionic kylixdedicated by Zynothamis in the early third quarter of the 6th century B.C., or the «Argive monochrome» Corinthian oinochoe of the early 6th century B.C. The pits of the 5th century yielded a Greco-Persian bone stamp with a lion and a hunter, as well as the foot of an Attic skyphos with inscribed Ionic alphabet having sabi after the last letter Ω (early 5th century B.C.)
