Abstract:
The excavation at fields nos. 31 (BB 3) and 197 (BB 23) of M. Stoukos and M. Kardamaki respectively was completed in 1991. In the same year the investigation atfield no. 25 (BB 3) owned by M. Pasalis also started. Field no. 31 (BB 3) owned by M. Stoukos A complex of buildings belonging to four main building phases were discoveredout of the Medieval castle of Brya, at the field owned by M. Stoukos in the western part of the archaeological site. A few remains of walls of the first phase were preserved. The second building phase was the most important, consisting of an oblong room with a built wine press. Two pairs of wine-press dated by coins between the late7th and the late 10th or early 11th centuries were located in the room. The cisterns were out of use in the 11th century and a kiln dated to the third building phase was built in the storeroom. Pottery and coins imply that the area was deserted for a while; however, new building activities started in the 12th century when two oblong buildings of the fourth building phase were built. Their size and their organization imply that they had been used as storerooms or workshops. Field no. 197 (BB 23) owned by M. Kardamakis A groups of late Roman graves covered with tiles and containing humble grave goods were discovered aat the field owned by M. Kardamakis in the eastern part of the archaeological site of Veria. Field no. 25 (BB 3) owned by M. PasalisThe excavation at the field owned by M. Pasalis, in the western part of the archaeological site was not completed, because of the weather. Part of a big building complex, the same one that had been discovered at the neighbouring building-grounds, was located at that field. According to the coins, it is a carefully built construction of late antiquity, which was used up to the 10th century. The use of the building changed in that period, as it is suggested by the division of the rooms into smaller ones.
