New sections of the south wall of ancient Abdera

Abstract:
Ancient Abdera had two fortifying walls: the N, which was older, and the S, which was probably built in the 4th c. Parts of the latter wall have been brought to light by the excavations that have been going on since 1950. Some new sections were located during the rescue digs conducted by the 19thEphorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in 1992 and 1993.I. NE and N sections Point 1. A long structure was uncovered, 1-1.5 m wide, consisting of vertically positioned or thostats on its three faces, the space between being filled in with small stones. It is probably part of the wall of a tower. Points 2-6. The outer face of the wall, consisting of large flat ashlars, was found embedded in the natural ground. It survives either at the level of the guideline or two or three courses high. The interior of the wall was filled with small rubble stones, which, since the ashlars on the outer face have gone, have spread over the whole width of the wall. The inner face was nowhere to be found. It may have been destroyed or be underneath the rubble, or it may never have existed (since the natural ground level inside was higher and may have offered an excuse to economise on materials).IL NW corner of the south wall Point 7. Some 4 m below present ground level a long structure 2.4 m wide was uncovered for a distance of 36 m. It consists of two parallel walls built ofhewn blocks with a rubble stone filling. The E side is in contact with thenatural rock, which slopes steeply and has been hewn away to make room forthe stone blocks. On the W side there is sea sand, in which fallen blocks were found up to 100 m away from the W face. Recent geomorphological investigations have shown that in antiquity the sea formed a gulf here, which gradually filled. The precise position of the coastline is unknown, but we believe we have located it at this point: the long structure must have been part of the city’s W sea wall or a quay
